Meat alternative companies hope product launches
create rooting interest among consumers

BEYOND MEAT JERKY
Plant Partnership LLC, the joint venture
between Beyond Meat Inc. and PepsiCo
Inc., is launching its first product: Beyond
Meat jerky.
Made with ingredients like peas and
mung bean, Beyond Meat jerky contains
10 grams of protein per serving and no
cholesterol. The non-GMO, soy-free and
gluten-free snack is available in original,
hot and spicy, and teriyaki flavors.
The jerky alternative is Beyond
Meat's first shelf stable product, unlocking
new channels of distribution with
availability spanning grocery stores, gas
stations, club stores and pharmacies,
according to the company.
Founded in 2019, Umaro Foods, formerly
known as Trophic, is developing
sustainable protein sourced from oceanfarmed
seaweed. Its first product offering,
plant-based bacon, is slated to launch
in foodservice within the coming months.
Future product development may include
breakfast meat and other cured meats.
On " Shark Tank, " the pair accepted
a deal with billionaire investor Mark
Cuban for $1 million in exchange for an
8% ownership stake of the business.
AMAZON FRESH
Amazon.com Inc.'s Amazon Fresh brand
has added plant-based meat and dairy
alternatives to its brand line. Fifteen
varieties are featured and include products
such as patties, nuggets, meatballs,
grounds, sausage and beverages.
The plant-based patties, meatballs,
grounds and sausages are formulated
with a combination of pea protein, sunflower
oil and coconut oil. The nuggets
feature
unbleached
enriched
flour and soy protein concentrate.

PRIME ROOTS
Prime Roots is setting its sights on the
bulk deli category, adding deli meats and
charcuterie to its lineup of koji-based
meat alternatives.
UMARO FOODS
Umaro Foods has raised $3 million in a
seed funding round led by AgFunder. The
funding was announced days before cofounders
Beth Zotter and Amanda Stiles,
PhD, appeared on the television show
" Shark Tank. "

The company uses koji, a filamentous
fungus native to Japan, to make proteinrich
analogs that mimic the taste and texture
of animal meat. Its new Koji Meat
line includes hams, turkey and salami, all
of which may be hand-sliced in true deli
style. Rounding out the selection are kojibased
pâtés, pepperoni and foie gras.
The deli meats and charcuterie products
are naturally umami-rich, GMO-free
and have simple ingredient lists, according
to the company.
2022 MEAT ALTERNATIVE TRENDS + TECHNOLOGY MEAT+POULTRY
ATLAST FOOD CO.
Atlast Food Co., a maker of whole-cut
plant-based meat alternatives, is now
MyForest Foods Co.
The company launched in 2020
with MyBacon, a meat-free bacon analog
made with mycelium, the vegetative
part of a fungus consisting of branching
fibers. The new name references the forest,
mycelium's natural environment, as
a reminder of the ingredient's origin.
