GIVING BACK
Smithfield
As part of its mission to provide hunger
relief around the country, Smithfield Foods
donated $100,000 to two pay-what-you-can
cafés, advancing the spread of affordable
access to nutritious food.
A $50,000 check was presented to both
Thelma's Kitchen, Kansas City, Mo., and A
Place at the Table, Raleigh, NC.
Thelma's Kitchen was founded by
longtime Kansas City resident Thelma
Altschul, who was known for feeding
neighbors in need with a hot, home-cooked
meal. Established more than 30 years ago,
Thelma's Kitchen is described as Kansas
City's first pay-what-you-can café model.
Recently, the organization announced a
newly renovated facility that will increase
the number of meals that can be served daily.
" A huge thank you to Smithfield
Foods for helping us kickstart the grand
reopening by providing meat for our menu
and a $50,000 gift, " said Chef Natasha
Bailey, head chef for Thelma's Kitchen.
" Generous donations like theirs help us
pay it forward for our neighbors who are
food insecure. "
Founded in 2018, A Place at the Table
said it is Raleigh's first pay-what-you-can
restaurant. Already, the restaurant has

at the Table has expanded its operations
to include a food truck, known as The
Travelin' Table, which will increase access
to restaurant-quality meals throughout the
Raleigh area.

pay-what-you-can mission on wheels, "
said Maggie Kane, founder and executive
director for A Place at the Table. " With
the help of Smithfield, we get to expand
our mission to serve good food and foster
community, regardless of means, beyond
our downtown Raleigh location. "

provide hot meals, water
and ice to communities
affected by the storm.
The distribution site
was set up at a Walmart
location in Houston,
Texas. In total, Tyson
Foods distributed
approximately 5,000 hot
meals per day, with 1 lb
of protein equal to four
servings.
Tyson began
distributing resources
on July 11 and ended
up extending its stay
through the weekend
and into the early next
week after considering
the strong demand.

Taste of the South held its 41st annual
charity gala in Washington, DC, this
summer, featuring Southern food, music
and hospitality to raise funds for 14
charities. As a Capitol-level sponsor of the
event, Wayne-Sanderson Farms supported
Taste of South's fundraising and prepared
three chicken dishes for the gala's menu.

of the South to support these worthy
charities committed to improving access
to care and ending the stigma surrounding
mental health in the South, which largely
encompasses our footprint in the states
and communities where we operate, " said
Jeremy Kilburn, chief legal and compliance
officer at Wayne-Sanderson Farms. " Our
culinary team has prepared three delicious

chicken dishes to serve up alongside
several Southern foods on the menu at
this year's event, and we expect it to be an
incredible evening for all involved. "
This year's menu featured cuisine from
several southern states contributed by local
sponsors. The Mississippi menu included the
three items provided by Wayne-Sanderson
Farms - Buffaloos buffalo chicken wings,
Fly'n Saucers oven roasted chicken wings
and Brazilian BBQ chicken thighs marinated
in a proprietary seasoning blend.

be distributed across 14 organizations that
provide critical resources and services to
support individuals and families affected
by mental health challenges.
