Canada Packers is
Foster Farms
enhances
Maple Leaf spin-off
Maple Leaf Foods Inc. officially unveiled
the name of its future new pork company
which will be known as Canada Packers
Inc. In July, the company's board of
directors approved a plan to spin-off the
Maple Leaf pork business and create two
publicly traded companies.
The new brand identity incorporates
iconic elements of the Maple Leaf Foods
logo and the Canadian flag, drawing on a
new color palette of natural green and blue
tones to reflect the new company's focus
on sustainability.
" We are thrilled to launch Canada
Packers as the new name for our future
independent pork company, " said Dennis
Organ, president of Maple Leaf Foods'
Pork Complex and incoming chief
executive officer of Canada Packers. " This
choice reflects our deep respect for the
history and legacy of this iconic brand,
while affording us the opportunity to bring
it forward and blend it with our ambitious
vision for the future as a world-leading
pork producer. "
Maple Leaf Foods said it will continue
to operate as a leader in the consumer
packaged goods sector, while Canada
Packers will be able to leverage its rich
heritage and expertise in the pork business
to pave a path as a global leader in
sustainably produced meat.
Upon completion of the separation,
Maple Leaf Foods will still retain 19.9%
ownership of Canada Packers. The two
companies will enter into an evergreen
pork supply agreement, benefiting each
party. Canada Packers will supply Maple
Leaf Foods with high-quality, sustainably
produced pork, while the new pork business
will profit from Maple Leaf's secure anchor
in the North American market.

Danish Crown announces more layoffs
European pork processor Danish Crown recently announced plans to lay off 500
employees in a major reorganization that would provide an annual cost reduction of
around $73 million. The move is in line with the company's shift from primarily supplying
raw materials to customers worldwide to increasing the value of Danish pork through the
production of sustainable, processed foods in 2021.
" Danish Crown is in the midst of a crisis, and we are facing sweeping changes, " said
Niels Duedahl, chief executive officer of Danish Crown. " Our costs are simply far too
high in relation to our earnings. It goes without saying that we are obliged to act on this,
and we are now adjusting our organization and focusing 100% on the core business to
ensure better settlements for the farmers who own Danish Crown. "
Danish Crown announced the closure of its Ringsted plant in Denmark in midSeptember.
The closure would result in the loss of nearly 1,200 jobs.

it released footage of
animal cruelty occurring
at a Foster Farms facility
in California. A couple of
days later, Foster Farms
officials announced
it had already taken
immediate action in
response to the situation.
While the conduct
was limited to a few
individuals, Foster
Farms said it will
implement additional
animal welfare practices
to prevent violations in
the future. Additional
protections include:
* An immediate,
companywide animal
welfare retraining on all
ranches and in all plants.
* The expansion of
Foster Farms' animal
welfare team with the
creation of a new role
- chief animal welfare
officer.
* The creation of
additional animal
welfare director roles
onsite covering each
Foster Farms complex.
* Increased frequency
of animal welfare audits,
particularly in live
operation facilities.
* Increased Professional
Animal Auditor Certified
(PAACO) staff.
