CONSIDERING COSTS
The decision to use resealable packaging
and/or to purchase products with resealable
closures can come at a cost. Reclosing
features add to the packaging/film cost but do
not mean higher on-line production costs for
customers, Bandari said. Like print, labels are
registered and require production equipment
to have photo eyes, something that's typically
standard. Processors considering zipper
reclosable packages could incur added costs
in relation to the zipper itself and slower
line speeds because of the added process of
inserting a zipper to the pack. Otherwise, no
equipment modifications are required to run
reclosable lidding film at a plant, as the film
runs just like any other register printed, nonforming
film, she continued.
Elements that could make a reclosable
packaging application more challenging can
come in the form of food products that are
inherently greasy such as bacon. From a
consumer perspective, the reclosable feature
means not having to cook the entire package
at once, but from a packaging perspective it
gets complicated.
Bacon in a vacuum pack is often filled tight
to the top film, and the size of the strip is not
always congruent with the size of a reclosable
