In recent months, the
program's production
practices have resulted in
more than the 10% target
in some cases. Harrison
said the company will
soon ask the USDA to have
the claimed moved to a
number above 10%. But
even reaching 10% involves
a number of variables that
must hit the mark.

" Oftentimes what we've found is a lot of the
things they're already on the cusp of doing, "
Harrison said. " Maybe they've done one or two
of them, they just haven't documented them or
had it as part of their process, or you ask them
to make a change to something like rotational
grazing and have a plan that way. "
Tyson built the program through
partnerships with The Environmental Defense
Fund, The Nature Conservancy and Broken
Arrow, Neb.-based Adams Land & Cattle.
The Environmental Defense Fund provided
an adapted version of its methodology
to assess nitrous oxide emissions and
incorporated it into Tyson's value chain.
The Nature Conservancy provided cow/calf
production practices to foster biodiversity and
ecosystem balance to enhance the program's
accounting model. Adams Land & Cattle
supply the program beef production and
data management. New York-based Deloitte
consulted on developing the framework of
the program.
