NAMI members commit to
GHG reduction targets
A consortium of companies representing
the meat and poultry processing industry
committed to promoting sustainability
by establishing transparent baselines and
setting goals as part of the Protein PACT
for the People, Animals and Climate of
Tomorrow, took a significant step Nov. 9.
According to the North American Meat
Institute (NAMI), 100% of its members
committed to greenhouse gas (GHG)
reduction targets by 2030, in accordance
with the Paris Climate Agreement goals.
NAMI said it will support members in
establishing the GHG targets, which will
be assessed and approved using criteria
established by the Science Based Targets
Initiative (SBTI).
NAMI's latest commitments as
part of the Protein PACT included the
announcement of five new targets and
a framework for sustainability as a
stakeholder in the initiative made up of 12
agricultural organizations with a common
Wayne Farms to sell
poultry production
complex to Amick Farms
Wayne Farms LLC reached an agreement
to sell the company's Laurel, Miss.,
poultry production complex to Batesburg,
SC-based Amick Farms, a subsidiary of OSI
Group. Financial terms of the agreement
were not disclosed.
Amick Farms agreed to acquire
the complex immediately, including
live production, hatchery, feed mill,
manufacturing and production facilities
located in Laurel. Amick Farms is a leading
producer of fresh and further-processed
poultry products.
Ben Harrison, president of Amick
Farms, said the acquisition gives the
company the opportunity and resources to
grow with its customer base and develop
new customer partners, provide more
quality products and continue providing
customer service excellence.

using science-based goals across all
protein sectors.

way, " said Julie Anna Potts, president and
chief executive officer of NAMI.
Besides assisting members with
establishing goals, NAMI will collect data
from processor member companies to
establish baselines to monitor progress on
those goals across categories that include
food safety, human rights, labor and
health and wellness.

ongoing goal of ours, and this transaction
was the perfect opportunity to grow our
Amick team. "
Amick Farms currently operates two
other vertically integrated facilities in
South Carolina and Maryland, employing
approximately 3,000 people.
Wayne Farms upgraded the Laurel
facility in 2020 at a cost of approximately
$16.9 million. Upgrades included
installation of automated equipment on
its processing line. Other enhancements
were in cutting, deboning, portioning and
packaging operations as well as new X-ray
detection technology. Besides the Laurel
facility, Wayne Farms operates eight other
fresh processing plants. It also operates
two further processing plants and employs
approximately 10,000 workers.

Impossible Foods has
taken another step in its
international expansion
with the announcement
that it is now offering
its flagship product,
Impossible Beef Made
From Plants (known
as Impossible Burger
in other markets) in
Auckland, New Zealand,
the greater Sydney area,
and nationwide across
Australia at Grill'd.
In addition to
Australia and New
Zealand, Impossible
Foods' products
are available in the
United States, Canada,
Singapore, Hong Kong
and the United Arab
Emirates.
Food Standards
Australia New Zealand,
Australia and New
Zealand's regulatory
body, earlier this year
approved Impossible
Foods' key ingredient,
heme (soy leghemoglobin),
for use in plantbased
meat products.
The ingredient has been
approved for sale in
every market that has
completed its regulatory
review, Impossible
Foods said.
