Academic opportunities
My son is in his senior year of high
school and we've been going through
the process of applying to universities.
His interests lie in the area of film
production, which isn't a common
degree offered at all colleges. So, after
quickly weeding out the schools that
don't even have a film studies major,
we spent time researching universities
that offer not only the degree he's
interested in, but those that provide
something above and beyond basic
classes. In his case, this means handson opportunities in film production as
well as the potential for internships,
competition and possibly learning from,
or working with, professionals from the
film industry. This will provide him with
the tools he needs to hopefully find
work in the industry after college.
There are a lot of great schools
out there, and a lot of competition to
attract students to specialty programs.
Students are looking for more than
a general education in a field of
study - they are looking for real-world
experience. Universities are realizing
this is what potential students want
and are really upping their game with
the programs they offer.
Many students around the country
with interests in animal and meat
science are searching for something

special that meets and exceeds their
academic needs - and there are a lot of
great options out there.
Colorado State University has
always been known as a strong
university for those interested in
studying animal and meat science. But
over the past five years, CSU has taken
it to the next level. In April 2019, CSU
unveiled the final phase of a multi-year
project to revamp its Department of
Animal Science facilities. In 2014,
there was an expansion of the original
building, and in 2019 the JBS Global
Food Innovation Center in honor of
Gary and Kay Smith was completed.
The $20 million-plus, 38,000-squarefoot project included creating
laboratories, faculty offices and
meeting spaces, a demonstration
kitchen, a test kitchen, classrooms and
a retail store. The project also included
the addition of a 2,800-square-foot
kill floor and 3,600 square feet of
processing space.
JBS USA provided a $12.5 million
investment to help provide facilities
and equipment that mirror commercial
processing plants and prepare students
to work in the industry by training
them in real-world environments.
The University of WisconsinMadision is also offering students
something above and beyond the
typical animal and meat science
education. In the December 2020
issue and in this issue (on Page 62),

about the school's new Meat Science
and Animal Biologics Discovery
(MSABD) building and program. The
$57.1 million project, just completed
in November, offers UW students and
faculty the chance to experience topnotch teaching, research and outreach
featuring the latest sanitary design,
animal handling, harvesting, processing
and microbial research in the industry.
The new building includes modern
offices and conference rooms, houses
Bucky's Varsity Meats retail store, and
contains a 21,400-square-foot, USDAinspected meat and poultry processing
facility and a separate Biosafety Level
2 (BSL-2) processing and laboratory
facility for food safety research.
Steven C. Ricke, director of UW's
MSABD program, said the program
offers, " first-class research facilities
to accomplish cutting-edge science
that applies advanced scientific tools
for solving practical problems [and]
encourages entrepreneurship. "
The new MSABD facility and
program offer UW students more than
just classroom learning opportunities
- they are offering students the chance
to experience what it's like to work
in the meat world. These experiences
are designed to better prepare and
equip students for future employment,
which, after all, should be what college
is all about.
