Q1 net income for
JBS slides 26.9%
JBS S.A. finished its first quarter starting
to feel the impact the coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic is having on the meat industry and its supply chain. Net income in the
first quarter ended March 31, 2020, totaled
803.2 million reals, down 26.9% from 1.1
billion reals in the same period a year ago.
Net sales increased 27.3% to 56.5 billion
reals from 44.4 billion reals in Q1 2019.
"In March, the last month of the quarter,
we felt the first impacts of the pandemic
on our sales, with reduced demand in the
foodservice channel and increased demand
in retail," said Gilberto Tomazoni, chief
executive officer of JBS Global. "Our team
reacted quickly, migrating volume from
one channel to the other. This demand

migration took place in virtually all markets
where we operate, with the only difference
being the intensity and duration of the
change. We are starting to see a recovery in
foodservice demand in several markets.
"JBS was able to deliver solid operating
performance in the first quarter due to
the experience of our leadership team
and our relentless focus on what we can
control during times of extreme volatility.
Net revenue was 56.5 billion reals, while
EBITDA reached 3.9 billion reals, with a
6.9% margin."
On May 11, JBS S.A. announced the
donation of 700 million reals ($121 million)
to help fight COVID-19 in the communities
where its employees live and work.

Sonoma Brands
takes Krave back
Krave Pure Foods Inc. has come full circle.
The jerky brand was created by Sonoma
Brands founder Jon Sebastiani in 2009,
acquired by The Hershey Co. in 2015, and
now has been acquired from Hershey by
Sonoma Brands.
Krave focuses on premium jerky, a
sub-segment of the meat snack category.
The snack maker has positioned itself as
a supplier of natural products with such
distinctive flavor varieties as black cherry
barbecue pork jerky, basil citrus turkey
jerky, and chili lime beef jerky. The brand's
portfolio of protein snacks features a
roster of Krave Meat Cuts, Krave Pork
Rinds and Krave Plant-Based Jerky, the
brand's most recent launch.

The North American
subsidiary of Germanybased Messe Frankfurt
will be taking over the
management of Process
Expo, the global food
equipment and technology show. The Food
Processing Suppliers
Association (FPSA)
will continue to own the
biennial trade show, but
the management of the
show, including sales,
marketing, operations
and sponsorships will
be transferred to Messe
Frankfurt.

Process Expo
features approximately
500 exhibitors displaying
the latest in machines,
products, technology
and services, as well as
networking opportunities and educational
programming.

Sonoma Brands

McDonald's in The Netherlands sought to
answer the question of what will dining out
look like in a post-pandemic society with
the reveal of a prototype restaurant in the
Arnhem GelreDome stadium.
In addition to contactless drive-thru
service, the restaurant design accounts for
in-store dining and carryout orders. For
dine-in customers, orders are served at the
table using a serving trolley to maintain
a safe distance between employees and
customers, the company said. Hand washing stations are by the restaurant entrance.
The "Take Out Plus" service provides
a completely contactless ordering experience that is aimed at serving customers
who cannot use the McDrive. Customers
can be asked to wait in a designated area
and place their orders by scanning a QR
code or using a digital kiosk.
Employees work in zones at 1.5 meters
apart and where necessary with Plexiglas
partitions. The new way of working for
McDonald's employees at the GelreDome
is called "Put down, step away and
transfer," according to the company.
