HORMEL SALES RISE FOR
TRADITIONAL BRANDS
Hormel Foods' earnings rose during
the second quarter of fiscal 2018, ended
April 29. The company benefited from
the strength of its Refrigerated Foods
business unit, which features such
staple brands as Spam, Hormel and
Natural Choice. But pressures from
rising freight costs, an oversupply
of turkey and a very aggressive
competitor in the sports nutrition
category pressured the company's
performance during the quarter.
Net income for the quarter rose
to $237,522,000, equal to $0.45 per
share on the common stock, up from
$210,926,000, or $0.40 per share, in the
same period a year ago.
Sales for the quarter rose to
$2,330,568,000, which compared with
$2,187,309,000 the year prior.
"Total company sales for the quarter
were up 7 percent on a 3 percent
volume increase," said James P. Snee,
chairman, president and CEO, during
a May 24 conference call with analysts
to discuss the results. "The increases
were driven by the recent strategic
acquisitions of Ceratti, Columbus Craft
Meats and Fontanini.

In Refrigerated Foods,
the company's largest
business unit, sales
rose 13.5 percent
to $1,166,967,000
and operating profit
increased 18 percent
to $154,192,000.
"On an organic basis, volume
decreased 1 percent while sales were
flat. Many value-added brands in each
segment grew, but the gains were offset
by lower results from Jennie-O Turkey
Store, CytoSport and our contract
manufacturing business."
In Refrigerated Foods, the
company's largest business unit, sales
rose 13.5 percent to $1,166,967,000 and

operating profit increased 18 percent to
$154,192,000.
"Our Hormel Natural Choice
franchise showed very strong growth
this quarter," Snee said. "This past
quarter, we fully converted our
REV product line to an all-natural
formulation and relaunched the
products under the Natural Choice
brand. The results to date have been
impressive.
"Foodservice sales of Hormel
Bacon fully cooked bacon, Hormel Fire
Braised Meats and Café H products
all generated excellent growth this
quarter as we continue to partner
with and deliver innovative solutions
to operators who are facing time and
labor challenges."
The company's Jennie-O Turkey
Store business faced challenges as well
during the quarter. Sales fell 4 percent
to $371,916,000 and operating income
fell 33 percent to $42,356,000. Snee said
an oversupply of turkey was one reason
for the weak performance, but added
management is seeing some signs the
supply issues may be changing.

DELI BRANDS COMPLETES
NEW SLICING FACILITY
Deli Brands of America, a subsidiary
of Savel Foods Corp., announced the
opening of its 22,000-sq.-ft. slicing and
logistics facility in Baltimore County,
Maryland, on June 11.
The company started construction
on the project in late October 2017. The
new facility will be used to support two
existing facilities nearby.  
Deli Brands of America produces
a variety of deli products including
corned beef, pastrami, roast beef,
as well as the Honest to Goodness
Natural Deli brand, made with
all-natural ingredients. 
"As a producer of perishable
products, it is critical to minimize travel
times and create an efficient logistics
center to transport product to our
growing customer base throughout the
Mid-Atlantic region as well as national

accounts throughout the United
States," said Jeff Savel, president of
Deli Brands of America. "The building
location is also convenient to our
existing employees and provides us
access to a highly-skilled base to recruit
new workers in the future."
In addition to deli products, the
company markets beef, pork, veal and
lamb items, as well as family recipes
that feature dishes such as corned beef
hash, roasted pork loin and pot roast.     

MARFRIG FINALIZES DEAL
FOR NATIONAL BEEF
Brazilian meat company Marfrig Global
Foods announced that it received
the necessary approvals to acquire
51 percent interest in Kansas City,
Missouri-based National Beef Packing
Co. LLC on June 6.  
According to reports in April,
Marfrig will pay $969 million for an
equity interest in National Beef. The
private bank Rabobank financed the
payment with the participation of
Banco Bradesco and ING.
The deal makes Marfrig the world's
second-largest beef processor with
combined sales of $13 billion.   
"The acquisition of National Beef
represents the realization of a unique
opportunity," Martín Secco, CEO
of Marfrig said in April. "With the
transaction, we will have operations
in the world's two largest beef
markets, will gain access to extremely
sophisticated consumer countries and
will be able to grow while maintaining
rigorous financial discipline."
Jefferies Financial Group, formerly
known as Leucadia National Corp.,
which acquired the ownership
interest in National Beef in 2011, sold
48 percent interest in the company.
Jefferies will retain 31 percent interest
as a minority shareholder.
US Premium Beef, comprised
of a group of 2,100 US-based cattle
producers that founded the company
in 1996, will retain 15 percent interest
in National Beef along with a 3 percent
