The impact of Salmonella on poultry
Salmonella is the most prevalent bacterial cause
of foodborne illness in the United States. Nearly
one-third of the one million cases reported each
year are attributed to eggs and poultry.1 Reducing
this risk is an enormous responsibility that rests
on the entire poultry operation, not just the
processing plants.
To be truly effective, Salmonella solutions require
an integrated, comprehensive approach to food
safety, which means every stage from egg to plate
should be treated as the last line of defense. That's
the purpose of Elanco's new food safety platform,
Salmonella 360.
Salmonella 360 is a holistic approach to Salmonella
control that utilizes food safety resources and
experience from across the poultry industry to
effectively manage and prevent this dangerous
disease throughout each phase of poultry production.
"Elanco understands the role the industry has in
reducing Salmonella risk," said Sara Steinlage, D.V.M.,
Elanco Poultry Technical Advisor. "Salmonella 360 is
a comprehensive approach that demonstrates the
role all stages of production can play."

Our industry, our responsibility
According to Steinlage, Salmonella has historically
been viewed as primarily a processing plant issue
because it doesn't typically present health or
performance issues for the bird itself.
"However, the mitigation - or lack of mitigation -
of Salmonella in one stage of production can have
a significant impact on later stages," she said.
For example, the health of a flock and the solutions
implemented during grow-out play an important
role in managing Salmonella. Vaccinations, feed
additives and good husbandry practices can help
strengthen and maintain bird health, giving a
flock the ability to fight infections and reach its
full potential.
"Salmonella is frustrating because there is no
single intervention that prevents it," said Patrick
Pilkington, D.V.M., Elanco. "So, that means we have
to consider all inputs, starting at the beginning with
the breeding stock and working from there."
