Larry Aylward
Having written for Meat&Poultry for more than a decade, Larry
began his journalism career as a sportswriter in 1985. He jumped
at the chance to write this month's cover story (see "Athletic Approach," Page 32) about past and current athletes who are now
competing in the meat and poultry industry. Larry was struck
by the level of knowledge the athletes have about the meat-processing industry. "They all seemed relieved to know that I didn't
want to talk about sports, but that I was interested in fi nding out more
about their businesses," says Larry. "This was one of my favorite assignments I've been given."
Bernie Shire
One of the magazine's most diverse writers, Bernie Shire's breadth
of knowledge is on display in this issue of Meat&Poultry, as he
authored his monthly Washington column (see "Tightening the
screws," Page 30), a feature looking at National Animal I.D. (see
"Keeping track," Page 42) and the bi-monthly Sanitation Tips
(see "Making contact," Page 84). Bernie's background in food
