Marvin points out that Identigen's DNA TraceBack is not
designed for residue analysis, E. coli detection or detecting
any other causative agent; it simply traces products from
point A to point B. "We are a proxy for quality; we're a
proxy for safety, but we don't determine whether E. coli is
in a batch or not," Marvin says. Tracking of whole-muscle
cuts and ground meat is possible with the technology. In
the event of question about product safety, our DNA traceback system allows our customers to narrow the scope of
a recall back to the source, which might be the processing
plant, quickly and accurately."

rollout of the Nature's Premium brand did not include a DNA
traceability facet, although as many as 60 percent of consumers
indicated traceability was important to them and they would
be willing to pay more for pork products offering it.
In the past year, Stewart's company began working with
Marvin's team to incorporate not only DNA traceback to their
operation, but having the technology verified by the U.S.
Dept. of Agriculture. "It's one thing for us to say we've got
DNA traceback," says Stewart, "and it's another thing when
we can say the USDA has looked at this and validated the
process of everything we are claiming."
"I think DNA and traceback and all the attributes we're
including in our Nature's Premium program are going to
help differentiate us," he adds. In an industry that has little tolerance for imprecise technologies, Stewart says DNAbased technology like this is a good fit. "As Don Marvin
[from Identigen] puts it: 'DNA is nature's bar code.' It's not
disputed," Stewart adds.

Bovine possibilities
Identigen has several pilot programs in place now and is collecting DNA samples from cattle at the farm level. "Some of
those do involve going back to the live animal and pulling
an ear biopsy and picking up a sample at that point," Marvin
says, but typically, the sampling is conducted post-harvest
and tracks meat from the carcass to the retailer. "That's the
part of the supply chain we focus on because that's where
a lot of decisions are made and a lot of money is made or
lost at that part of the supply chain," Marvin says.
Similar programs are currently being developed by Identigen for applications at U.S.beef facilities. The company
plans to announce a partnership with a well-known beef
company in the near future.

Steve Sands, president and chairman of Premium Protein
Products, with facilities in Lincoln and Hastings, Neb., is
benefiting from traceability technology proven successful far
from the Cornhusker State. PPP was founded in 2003 when
the company purchased a former beef-processing plant in
Hastings and renovated it with traceability in mind. The company also maintains a further-processing plant in Lincoln,
Neb., where it manufactures various value-added products.
The slaughtering facility has a capacity of 500 hogs per day
and ships much of its capacity to Japan.
One of PPP's customers, and now one of its investors,
Yonekyu, is a Japan-based, publicly-traded, vertically integrated meat company (including a restaurant chain). Yonekyu
developed a state-of-the-art traceability system for their domestically processed and distributed products that it now
makes available to PPP. Adapting the Japanese system to
the higher-volume, Premium Protein plant's processing facility required some engineering tweaks, but Sands says the
same principals still applied. "It's a combination of off-theshelf products, custom-written software and processes that
are enforced within the plant using bar coding and RFID
and it extends into the production sector," says Sands of the
Tracked Right traceability his firm is banking on. The system
is also utilized to ensure the company is able to purchase
the most productive cattle for its specifications.
As part of the Yonekyu program, Japanese consumers can
log onto the company's Web site using their cell phones, PC
or via in-store scanners to view how and where an individual product came from by using a unique bar code on the
package. "The consumer can either take the overwrapped
piece of meat and either wave it across the scanner at the
meat case or punch in an identification number once they
get home." The bar-code number links to a database of the
company's producers, which are profiled on the Web site.
After inputting the product number, customers can view
links to the packer, the breed, date of birth, date of harvest,
the feedlot and ranch.
Tracked Right is based on touch-screen technology that
links to automated rails in the plant. Carcasses are color coded with tags to identify various lots, their attributes and their
ranch of origin. "We track that process from the time the
