Maple Leaf recall expanded, plant closed
Toronto-based Maple Leaf Foods has
expanded a recall of a wide range of
packaged meat products manufactured
at its facility in Toronto on Aug. 20,
because some of the products may be

contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company also temporarily closed the plant to investigate the
cause of the contamination.

Sure Slice
Roast Beef
and Sure Slice
Corned Beef products were involved in
the initial recall announced on Aug. 17.
Additional products subsequently recalled
were largely distributed to foodservice
customers and may also be sold at deli
counters supplied by foodservice distributors. Retail products affected included
beef, ham, turkey and salami deli meats
and were distributed nationally.

BSE case confirmed
in Alberta
Another case of bovine spongiform
encephalopathy has been identified
in mid-August in a six-year-old beef
cow from Alberta. The Canadian Food
Inspection Agency said the animal's
birth farm has been identified and an
investigation is under way.
As with past investigations, the
CFIA is tracing the animal's herd
mates at the
time of birth
and looking
for possible
sources of infection. The
case was detected through Canada's national BSE
surveillance program.
The case is the second this summer. In late June, the CFIA identified
a case of BSE in a five-year-old Holstein cow in British Columbia.
