Soybean and corn crops
For the two-week period ending Aug.
29: Soy complex futures were slightly
lower except old crop soybeans and
soybean meal, which were higher.
Prices across the complex were higher
early last week on concerns about dryness, low temperatures and the potential for an early frost. However, prices
dropped as the week progressed after
much-needed rain fell across much of
the Midwest and Southeast and forecasts called for above-normal temperatures for the next several days.
The good to excellent rating of the
soybean crop in the 18 major states as
of Aug. 24 declined for the second consecutive week, to 61 percent from 62
percent a week earlier, but remained
above 55 percent a year ago, according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
The soybean harvest was 11 percent

completed in Texas, 6 percent in Louisiana and 2 percent in Mississippi as
of Aug. 24.
Net export sales of U.S. soybeans
during the week ended Aug. 21 for
2007-08 and 2008-09 were 143,100
tonnes, including a 193,300-tonne reduction for the current year, the USDA
said. Soybean meal sales for both years
were 75,900 tonnes, up 43 percent from
a week earlier. Sales of soybeans and
soybean meal were within the range
of trade expectations.
As for corn crops, corn meal sales
were steady in late August while prices declined.
Corn futures prices declined as fund
selling and easing concerns about weather overshadowed support from briefly
higher crude oil prices. Good amounts
of rainfall across much of the Midwest

and South were seen as beneficial, but
the impact of weather was becoming less
of a factor on corn than on soybeans as
the corn crop matured.
The corn crop condition in the 18
major states as of Aug. 24 declined for
the first time since Midwest flooding
in mid-June.
As of late August, the crop was rated 64 percent good to excellent, down
from 67 percent a week earlier but still
above 59 percent at the same time last
year, the USDA said.
Corn harvesting progressed in the
South with combining in Texas 61 percent completed as of Aug. 24, Oklahoma, 30 percent; Arkansas, 4 percent;
Louisiana, 55 percent; Mississippi, 15
percent; Alabama, 16 percent; Georgia, 27 percent; and South Carolina,
21 percent.
