Beef
According to Cattle Buyers Weekly,
spring-time demand and last month's
news that U.S. beef exports to South
Korea would resume have given the
beef segment a reprieve from the record-high feed prices hammering the
beef industry. According to U.S. Meat
Export Federation officials, Korea's border closure came at a cost of as much as
$4 billion over the past four years and
beef-exporting companies look forward
to gaining back that market share.
Buoyed by the biggest operating margins since June 2006, in late-April U.S.
packers were paying more for cattle for
several weeks in a row. According to
CBW, Cattle traded actively in Texas and
Kansas April 24 at $92 per cwt. ($89.96
and $89.78 respectively the previous
Friday). They sold at $92.50-$93 live
or $150 in the beef in Nebraska ($90.34

or $146.64 previously) and at $92.50-93
in Colorado. As of April 24, U.S. Dept.
of Agriculture reported an estimated
189,000 head sold at these prices in a
five-state area. This represented a continued rally in boxed-beef prices.
From April 18-24, the Choice cutout
advanced $5.36 per cwt. to $155.27,
which represented an $18.18 increase
since April 4.
The Select cutout advanced $4.14
April 18-24, $15.28 since April 4. Spot
market volume though was light in early April (768 loads of due mostly to the
larger amount of forward-sold product). That week's kill was an estimated
695,000 head compared to 676,000 the
prior week. Analysts say the increase
might outpace demand and cause prices
to reach their peak.
Cattle producers are still reeling from
last month's news from the U.S. Dept. of
Agriculture that corn use for 2007-2008

Pork
For the two-week period ending April
11, pork cutout values improved,
thanks in part to increases of $6 per
cwt. over the previous week in 16-18
lb. bellies and demand increases for
pork that increased from December to February by 5 percent over
the previous year. The good news
was offset somewhat by record-high
production, resulting in additional
meat being moved to cold storage,

market year are forecast to top the previous year's production by 36 million
bushels. Meanwhile, ending stocks are
projected to fall short of last year's by
approximately 21 million bushels. Analysts are predicting the cattle industry
will more aggressively reduce its overall
herd size as $6 per-bushel corn prices
are expected to soon be the norm.
