Reducing metal contamination
Mettler-Toledo Safeline Inc. publishes new guide to help processors
build and maintain an effective metal-detection program
Meat and poultry processors
recognize the need for employing
metal detection systems in their
manufacturing plants to ensure safety
and wholesomeness of their millions
of pounds of products processed
each day. However, in recent years
the importance of effective metal
detection has escalated due to much
stronger food safety regulations and
the catastrophic brand and financial
damage a metal contaminant recall
can cause.
According to Mettler-Toledo
Safeline, merely installing metal
detectors alone, however, does not
necessarily guarantee that a metal-free
product will be produced unless the
installations form part of an effective
overall metal detection program. As
a result, the company has written
a 66-page guide titled "Reduction
of Metal
Contamination:
Building an
Effective
Program" to
assist meat
and poultry
processors in
creating such a
program.
"An effective
metal detection
program can provide protection
against product contamination and
recalls, help maintain hard-fought
supplier certification status and reduce
the overall cost of implementation
in your plant," said Joe Gianfalla,
marketing manager, Mettler-Toledo
Safeline. "The program can also
support the ability to prove that

reasonable precautions and due
diligence have been applied in the
manufacturing process in the event of
a legal claim."

The guide provides a comprehensive
reference point for those involved
in food safety, giving insight into all
aspects from basic principles through
to implementing a comprehensive
metal detection program.
