Koch's Turkey Farm rolls out
natural, organic deli meats
This past July, Koch's Turkey Farm, Tamaqua, Pa., introduced a line of natural
and organic turkey deli meats to its retail customers. The products are available
in either all-natural or organic varieties and come in three different flavors: oven
roasted, smoked and vanilla pepper. Catering to
specialty supermarkets, including national chains
such as Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market, the new product line is available at in-store
delis or in pre-sliced, 7-oz packages.
Duane Koch, president, said the new product
line addresses the growing demand for readyto-eat natural and organic meats.
"A good hearty sandwich can also be healthy with our new turkey deli meats,"
Koch said.
Using meat from birds raised on all vegetarian feed and free-range access,
Koch's processes natural and organic whole turkeys as well as a line of all-natural, marinated turkey fillets, smoked turkey breasts, fresh ground turkey and
turkey sausage.

Burger King Corp. is rolling out two blends of trans fatty acid-free cooking oils nationwide. The Miami-based
fast-food company expects the oils to be in use in all
of the chain's 7,100-plus eateries by the end of 2008,
if adequate supplies of the oils are available.
Burger King began in-store testing of trans fat-free
oils this past February.

Wendy's International Inc., Dublin, Ohio, will give buying preference to pork suppliers that do not use gestation crates and chicken suppliers that do utilize controlled atmosphere stunning.
"We believe these actions will lead our suppliers and others in the pork and
chicken industry to continue to identify improved methods of handling animals
prior to processing," said Tad Wampfler, Wendy's senior vice president of supply
chain management. "These actions continue to demonstrate our long-term commitment to the principles of humane animal treatment."
Currently, at least 10 percent of Wendy's pork products are from hogs not raised
in gestation stalls. The company's goal is to reach 20 percent by the end of 2008
and continue to increase over time. Wendy's animal welfare experts recently visited a turkey processing facility and recommended the company grant preferred
status to suppliers actively using or testing the CAS technology.
In May, Wendy's posted a statement on its Web site saying the company agreed
with industry efforts to move away from gestation crates. At the time, the company
also said it considered CAS to be a "developing new technology."
