Pilgrim's Pride creates position
to manage commodity use
In an effort to address rising feed and energy costs, Pittsburg, Texas-based Pilgrim's Pride Corp. has appointed Edwin Carter to fill the newly created position
of senior vice president of commodity risk management. Carter is responsible for
strategic planning and marketing for all of the company's commodity-based items
such as grains, meals, oils, gas and diesel fuel.
"Soaring prices for corn, soybean meal and other commodities represent one of
the biggest operating challenges facing the chicken industry today, so it is imperative
that we seize every opportunity to manage these costs and reduce our exposure to
market volatility," said O.B. Goolsby Jr., Pilgrim's Pride president and CEO.
Carter has more than 20 years of experience in trading and risk management
in commodity markets. Before joining Pilgrim's Pride, he served as director of
procurement - commodity risk management for Coca-Cola Bottlers' Sales & Services Company LLC.

Defense Department to utilize Tyson
byproducts for fuel research
Officials with Syntroleum Corp., Tulsa, Okla., announced in July the company
has signed a contract to supply synthetic jet fuel using byproducts from Tyson Foods Inc. to the U.S. Department of Defense. The agency is exploring
options that would allow it to utilize renewable fuel in the future. The company said the fuel is produced by Dynamic Fuels L.L.C., which is a joint venture with Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson, and utilizes Syntroleum's Biofi ning
technology. According to the contract, Tyson will
supply the fat used to produce 500 gallons of renewable synthetic jet fuel, which will be used for
testing in military turbines as the U.S. Air Force
strives to certify all of its airplanes to use alternative fuel by 2010.
"This announcement, directly on the heels of our agreement with Tyson
Foods Inc. to begin design and construction of Dynamic Fuels' first commercial renewable synthetic fuels plant, further strengthens and validates Syntroleum's business model," said Jack Holmes, CEO of Syntroleum.

Tyson plant in Missouri cited
for alleged OSHA violations
Tyson Foods Inc., Springdale, Ark., is facing proposed fines of $339,500 from the
U.S. Dept. of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration for violations
of safety and health violations at its poultry processing plant in Noel, Mo.
Penalties were proposed by the agency in mid-July for 46 serious violations totaling $146,000; one willful violation in the amount of $55,000; eight repeat violations totaling $137,500 and $4,000 for four other-than-serious violations. Inspection
by OSHA officials at the plant, where approximately 1,100 workers are employed,
began this past January as part of its Site-Specific Targeting Program.
According to a statement issued by OSHA, the facility's alleged serious violations included inadequate exhaust duct grease filters and inspections; inadequately maintained floors; hazardous elevated walking and working areas; obstructed
and inadequately marked exits; improperly stored chemicals; and exposed wiring, among other items.
