Reinvestments
continue despite
market challenges

riven by growing demand for new products, improved efficiency and food safety,
a variety of meat and poultry processors
are growing their businesses through new, expanded or renovated facilities.
MEAT&POULTRY's annual construction survey
lists new plant projects as well as renovations and
expansions completed in the past 18 months or
have been announced and are currently under way.
And by the shear number of projects listed this
year, it appears meat and poultry processors are
busy investing in new and expanded facilities.
Despite market challenges created by rising
fuel prices, bans on U.S. beef exports and avian
influenza-induced drops in poultry consumption
internationally, processors are spending millions
to improve efficiencies and make facilities more
specialized. In total, the 2006 survey lists 127
construction projects, which is slightly less than
the 129 in last year's report. And the 2005 report
was up significantly from 2004, when only 76
construction projects were listed. Construction
projects listed in this year's report vary widely in
size and scope. The majority of the projects on
this year's list are expansions; however, 42 new
construction projects are listed, which is down
slightly from last year when 50 new construction
projects were listed.
While some projects on the 2006 list have as
little as $1 million investments, others are much
bigger. The largest investment listed this year is
the $155-million plant expansion at Perdue Farms'
Perry, Ga., plant, which was completed earlier
this year.
Meat processing technology continually
evolves, and this is one of the biggest driving
forces for processors to build or expand their facilities. Oftentimes, processors are looking for
ways to modernize their facilities and will consider adding new automated equipment in their
operations. New equipment also can lend itself to
faster production speeds, another factor driving
construction projects in the industry.
MEAT&POULTRY editors compiled projects for the 2006 construction survey from
a variety of sources, including a nationwide
economic development report from Conway
Data, Inc. as well as news reports collected
over the past year.
