are trying to discover which bacteria
are resistant to which antibiotics and
how the bacteria continue to develop
resistance. Tracking resistant bacteria in
samples collected from animals on the
farm or in slaughter facilities can help
identify intervention points to prevent
development and transfer of bacterial
resistance.

■ A group of Russian scientists say they
have discovered a way to keep meat
fresh for up to three months using
additives found naturally in living
cells. This could boost Russia's
domestic meat sector, reports

scientist has found an economic way to
bring dairy to the tropics, where milk is
scarce because cows there calve only
every two years and make just enough
for the calf to survive. Jack Rutledge, a
UW professor of animal science, is
creating hybrid embryos from Wisconsin
cows' oocytes and imported semen from
a tropically adapted bull, then exporting
these embryos to Hanoi, Vietnam, where
he is working with the National Institute
for Biotechnology, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Local tropical cows
are then artificially inseminated, producing a cow that is both productive and
resistant to the local environment.
