introduced a musical sandwich. Citing
statistics that an estimated 1 million
Britons eat lunch at their desks each day,
Tesco is using technology similar to that
used in singing greeting cards to "provide busy office workers with relaxing
music to make eating lunch at their desks
more enjoyable," said Tesco spokesman Jonathan Church in a Reuters
article. Opening the top of the
sandwich box activates the
music, and initial tunes
included "Jingle Bells,"
"Santa Claus is Coming
to Town" and "We Wish
You a Merry Christmas," since it was introduced in December. Future flavor/song
considerations include "Prawn to Be
Wild," "Let It Brie" and "Fillings."

■ A study published in Science Communication examined agricultural scientists'
perceptions of the news media and their
perceived need for media-relations skills.
"Trying to Relate: Media Relations
Training Needs of Agricultural Scientists"
showed that respondents were more
negative about national news coverage
and more positive about local news
coverage of agricultural and scientific
stories.
Restaurant menus as
historical artifacts?
■ Ecologists are studying restaurant
menus dating back to the 1850s as part
of a 10-year project. The study will assess
the diversity, distribution and abundance
of fish that populated the world's oceans,
how fishing practices affected them, and
what can be done to save those that have
become endangered. Menus provide the
researchers with one of the oldest and
most reliable sets of data on the types of
fish consumed 150 years ago, according
to a Bloomberg article.

that adding compounds to an animal's
feed may increase marbling fat, thus
increasing meat juiciness. Scientists from
the Animal Physiology Research Unit,
in partnership with the University of
Georgia, developed a method that can
increase marbling fat by as much as 3.5
