Normally, when people visit Liberty
Hill Farm, they come prepared with
sturdy shoes and clothes they don't
mind getting grubby. But one visitor
was so taken by the farm, he just
couldn't resist a little mud.
"This guy was here on a business trip, but he wanted to go down
to the barn and see the cows before
he took off for the day," recalls Beth
Kennett, who owns the farm with
her husband, Bob.
So the man trooped down to
the barn, pristine-clean business suit
and all, to say one last goodbye to
the family's cows.
Kennett and her husband own
180 head of registered Holsteins, 75
of which are dairy cows, and farm
about 250 acres of hay and corn. For
the past 20 years, they've also operated a bed-and-breakfast that features a family-style dinner in addition
to breakfast. Guests are invited to
observe the milking process and help
feed the calves.

Adding value to the farm
Agritourism - a mix of tourism and
agriculture in which consumers
experience agriculture firsthand - is
taking on a life of its own. Income
from agritourism-related activities in
Kennett's state of Vermont, for
example, increased 86 percent
between 2000 and 2002, to $19.5
million, according to the New England Agricultural Statistics Service.
The trend has made its way
as far as Hawaii,

which boasted a 50 percent increase
in the number of farms with agritourism activities between 2000 and
2003, according to the Hawaii Agricultural Statistics Service.
Numerous forces are driving
this growth, none the least of which
is profit. Although there are no
national statistics, about 95 percent
of agritourism operators sell agriculture products directly to consumers, estimates Jim Maetzold, an
agritourism consultant. He figures
between 50 and 60 percent of this
activity takes place between the start
of school and Halloween.
"Everybody's trying to figure out
how to add value to the farm," says
Sarah Gehring, AgriMissouri memberservices coordinator for the Missouri
Department of Agriculture. "It gives
farmers the opportunity to tell the
agriculture story that people are missing because they don't grow up with
grandparents on farms anymore."
And people don't hesitate to
fork over money to hear that story.
"The general urban population
today is really yearning to have an
experience in the country because
they are so removed from the farm,"
says Jane Eckert, founder of Eckert
AgriMarketing, a St. Louis-based
company that educates farmers
about agritourism. "They want their
children to see that. They're willing
to pay for those experiences."
Those experiences are becoming
more and more varied. Agritourism
isn't just bed-and-breakfasts that
happen to be located on working
