Industry coalition awaits law
on nutritional labeling

ith a sustained interest
in wellness and healthy
living, consumers are
driving many labeling initiatives
in the retail meatcase. Ingredient
listings, nutritional attributes and
allergen issues are top of mind
among consumers and often addressed by lawmakers. Thanks to
these inquisitive consumers, regulations on what can and cannot be
mentioned or claimed on meat
and poultry packages and at retail
points of purchase are many. Just
as numerous are the required details about ingredients, serving
sizes and the products' impact
on daily allowances.
In some instances, labeling
requirements have been viewed
as challenges to processors in terms of
interpreting the regulations or in adding manufacturing costs. According to
Randy Irion, director of retail marketing for the National Cattlemen's Beef
Association, a group of organizations
is using nutrition labeling as a tool to
sell more protein. Irion says nutrition

labeling and including cooking instructions on meat packages are two of
the leading trends in the retail industry,
and both topics represent initiatives
pursued by N.C.B.A.
"Any day now we are expecting the
U.S.D.A. to announce the new labeling
guidelines as it relates to fresh meat,"
he says.
Since the mid 1990s, the industry
has been waiting for guidance from
the agency on what will be mandatory,
point-of-sale material informing customers about the nutritional profiles of
various cuts and species of meat and
poultry products. The release of the
requirements has been anticipated and
promised on numerous occasions over
the past 10 years, says Irion. "Everyone genuinely believes they are going
to come out very soon."
Anxiously awaiting the mandate
are a number of industry groups with
a common interest. The Nutrition Labeling Coalition for Meat and Poultry
includes: N.C.B.A., American Meat Institute, National Grocers Association,
Food Marketing Institute, National
