the point where we are putting actual
pictures of what the cooked product
should look like as well. Consumers
gets a lot more excited about a fresh
product when they see something
that looks more appealing in terms
of pictures of cooked product. It
helps to sell product."
Bozzo says C.M.A. has seen some
better technology when it comes
to the machinery used for vacuum
packaging its products. "The machinery is faster, and takes up a
smaller footprint," he says.
Increasing costs
Vacuum packaging products, especially individual portions, is going to cost more than just placing
portioned product in a poly-lined box.
"And that is the delicate balance,"
Bozzo says. "We are seeing customers
asking for more but also trying to do
all that while keeping their costs the
same and that is a challenge."
And because the films used in vacuum packaged products are petroleum
based, their price has risen dramatically in the past two to three years, Bozzo
says. He says this additional cost has to
be passed along to customers.
"As oil goes up film is going to go
up," says Kuck . "There is not much we
can do about it. Has it affected the bottom line? No, you just raise your prices; you've got to go up a couple cents
here and there."
