"The World Health Organization
reconfirms that, when poultry products are safely handled and properly
cooked, humans are not at risk of acquiring H5N1 infection through food,"
said Dr. Lee Jong-Wook, director general of W.H.O. "Although the H5N1 virus is highly infectious among poultry,
it is not easily transmissible to humans.
Since December 2003, this virus is
known to have infected 173 people, of
whom 93 have died. Not one of these
cases has been linked to the consumption of properly cooked poultry or
poultry products."
In India, where the virus was first reported this past month, poultry industry
trade associations say members have
lost approximately $1.1 billion due to a
decrease in poultry consumption.
"Sixty thousand Americans died
last year from the common flu," said
Dr. Linda Logan, area attaché with
the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department
of Agriculture. "In the last three
years, fewer than 100 people worldwide have died from the bird flu.
People, and the news media, must put
this in perspective."
Logan, who is posted in Cairo, Egypt
was the featured speaker at a press
conference in Dubai that was put on
by the U.S.A. Poultry and Egg Export
Council, Stone Mountain, Ga. She appealed to the media for perspective in
their reporting of A.I. outbreaks in the
region, saying the intensive coverage
has raised concerns among consumers
about eating poultry.
"It's a tragedy consumers worldwide
are depriving themselves of their best
protein value, poultry," said Jim Sumner, president of USAPEEC. "While
we're pleased domestic consumption in
the United States has not been affected,
we're alarmed that export statistics and
cold storage figures indicate consumption worldwide is down considerably.
And really it shouldn't be."
