U.S.D.A. weighs in
on diet issues

Americans spend billions of dollars
each year buying books, joining health
clubs and subscribing to plans to help
them get rid of unwanted pounds and
girth. This weight-losing activity heats
up every year when the holiday season comes upon us, runs through the
spring, reaches a peak during the summer and trails off in the fall, only to be
revived each New Year's.
Consider the following: A panel
of lawmakers in the House of Representatives has approved a proposal
to protect food processors from being
sued and held responsible for making
people gain weight or becoming obese.
Incidents of anorexia, the potentially
fatal eating disorder, is growing and
becoming more of a cult, especially
among young women and teenagers.
Meanwhile, portion sizes are growing
every day.
It's no exaggeration that people in the
United States have become obsessed
with dieting and losing weight. Some advocates of dieting preach the importance
of diet being a part of "adopting a healthy
lifestyle," but changing the way we live
to be healthier is not really part the
weight-loss focus. It centers on dropping
pounds by vastly altering our diets.
Recently, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture interceded into the diet and
weight loss frenzy with its revisions to
the Food Guide Pyramid. U.S.D.A. renewed its longtime efforts to help U.S.
citizens not only lose weight, but to
achieve healthier lives, with the latest
recommendations of how and what to
eat. The agency calls it's latest revision
"My Pyramid," a change from 1992's
"Food Guide Pyramid." Governmental
efforts aimed at helping Americans eat
better go back to the 1890s, with dietary recommendations based on food
groups. During World War II, U.S.D.A.
began promoting its "Basic Seven Food
Groups," but the plan was too confusing for most Americans to follow.
In 1992, U.S.D.A. introduced artwork in the form of a colorful pyramid
illustrating the healthiest way to eat.
This pyramid was somewhat confusing, because the government was
trying to emphasize what Americans
should eat most of and least of, by putting grain-based foods at the bottom,
in the widest section of the pyramid,
and locating dairy and meat items toward the top, the "smallest" part of the
structure. Most people seemed to think
that the "top" of the pyramid was the
"best" location, and the "bottom" was
the "worst," creating
the idea that meat
and dairy were more
important than fruit
and vegetables that
were below them.
The new look of
My Pyramid solves
this problem in two
ways. First, the food
categories are horizontal, not vertical,
illustrating which
food categories U.S.D.A. thinks are
most important by the width of the category bands. The wider bands indicate
more of those foods should be eaten,
while the more narrow bands indicate
the government's recommendation that
people should eat less of a particular
food type. The new pyramid even has
its own Web site, MyPyramid.gov,
which has interactive features to tailor
recommendations based on people's
size and lifestyle.
Surprisingly, not much opinion has
been expressed about U.S.D.A.'s latest
nutrition guide, when you consider how
focused this country is on dieting and
losing weight. Most bromides thrown
at My Pyramid come from groups trying to find something positive to say
about the government's efforts.
Many groups believe U.S.D.A.'s My
Pyramid is the best dieting guide out
there, and even they would admit there
are a few problems with it. As was the
case with the former pyramid, My
Pyramid isn't very encouraging when
it comes to meat consumption. The
latest recommendations say merely
that consumption of meat or poultry
should be only from lean cuts. Meat
trade organizations such as the American Meat Institute, Washington, D.C.,
have turned this into a positive by noting that U.S.D.A./H.H.S. nutritional
guidelines advise consumption of
"nutrient-dense" foods, which would
include meat and poultry.
My Pyramid is helpful, because it
also advises Americans to get more exercise, along with changing their diet

feature of My Pyramid is reaffirmation
of U.S.D.A.'s longtime dietary advice:
eat a balanced diet-some meat, some
vegetables, some fruit, some grains,
some dairy products and a small
amount of oils. The pyramid looks at
what Americans are eating and offers
advice on how to improve, whether by
changing diets, eating more or less of a
food type, and maybe even working in
a little more exercise.
