The person who has influenced
my career the most is:
My wife, Deborah. She has given me
total support throughout my career.
We moved several times - from
Michigan to Alabama to Dallas to
Arizona to California to Lubbock,
Texas, to Wisconsin and then to
Tennessee Pride in Nashville, Tenn.
She has stuck with me for 30 years.
We also have two kids Kathryn, 26,
and Austin, 24.
The defining moment in my
professional or personal life:
When I was in combat as a member
of the U.S. Army in Vietnam. In
November 1970, we spent the night
on a mountain top. It was the coldest
night of my life. I said to myself, "If I
ever get home, I'm going to finish my
college education, and I'm going to
get a job and work indoors." Vietnam
also gave me mental freedom. The
experience made me realize that if I
woke up the next day, I had a great
day. And if I woke up, I should go
do whatever I was thinking of doing.
Vietnam gave me the mental freedom
to make changes in my life.
The greatest invention the
industry has seen is:
It has to be the refrigerated railcar,
which totally changed our industry.
Without it we wouldn't have the
industry we have today.
My favorite movie:
"Cool Hand Luke."
If I could change something
about the industry right now,
it would be:
The big boys like Sara Lee and
Johnsonville Sausage have done

a really good job of supporting
initiatives like food safety and animal
handling. They really have the
industry at heart. I'm concerned about
the smaller companies, though. They
run at different standards and put our
industry at risk. I would like to see
them step up to the plate in regard to
these issues.
If I could pick my final meal it
would include:
A medium-rare New York strip.
If a movie were made about my
life,
would play me:
Clint Eastwood. He'd have to go do
that for me.
The individual/company/
organization that has had the
biggest impact on the industry is:
Patrick Boyle and the American Meat
Institute. They have stood up and
really brought our industry together.
They've given us training and have
helped us organize to meet challenges
such as HACCP and equipment design
for food safety. A.M.I. has done an
outstanding job of helping the industry
move forward. Boyle has been a key
part of that with his leadership.
My favorite sport to watch and/
or play is:
Favorite sport to watch is soccer.
Favorite sport to play is downhill
skiing.
Favorite vacation spot:
In the summer it's Hilton Head, S.C.,
and in the winter it's Steamboat
Springs, Colo.
If I were to describe myself in
one word, it would be:
Focused.
I hope to be remembered as:
A great father, a good husband and a
fair, ethical businessperson.
