M&P 's 20th annual salary, benefits and job satisfaction survey

his year MEAT&POULTRY is
profiling the salary and benefits
received by executives working
for the industry's small- and midsize
companies. In addition, we have also
gathered data on their levels of job satisfaction. The results are revealing.
Before turning the page to get to the
results, however, there are a few caveats.
It is always a challenge to put together
our annual Salary and Benefits survey.
The reason is because we take great care
in selecting our survey audience.
Every year we alternate between
surveying executives working for large
and small/medium companies. However, while we know who we are sending
the surveys to, we do not know who is
returning them, because the process is
anonymous. This can create problems
when readers attempt to do comparisons between surveys.
For example, this year we surveyed
executives working with small and medium-size companies. We surveyed the
same demographic in our 2003 survey.
However, comparing this year's survey

with 2003 could incorrectly indicate
that executives have received less compensation over the past two years. That
is not the case. In fact, we surveyed
salaries and bonuses for 2004 as well as
2005 and used these figures to calculate
the average percent change in total compensation for 2004 versus 2005.
In 2003, 50.5 percent of the respondents worked for companies with less
than $25 million in annual sales. This
year, 64.2 percent of the respondents
work for companies with sales less than
$25 million. The 14 percentage point
increase in executives working for
small companies has more to do with
the overall salaries we are reporting
this year compared to 2003 than the pay
situation in the industry.
So, with the caveats out of the way,
let's get on to the survey.
On the following pages we provide breakouts for eight executive/
management level positions. Within each
profile are data for salary, total cash compensation, benefits, level of education
achieved and job satisfaction.
As the data on this page indicates, the
majority of our respondents work for
meat and poultry processors rather than
slaughterers. The primary products pro-

cessed by them are beef and pork, and
70 percent of the people who returned
surveys work for companies that employ fewer than 100 employees.
This year's survey also represents a
milestone for M&P. For the past two
decades we have tracked the salary and
benefits packages received by managers in the North American meat and
poultry industry. At the end of this
year's salary and benefits survey we
provide some historical data on how
salary and benefits have evolved for
the past two decades.
