Federal government introduces new dietary guidelines
The sixth edition of the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, released
this past month, places stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and increasing physical activity.
The joint project of the Dept. of Health
and Human Services and the U.S. Dept.
of Agriculture is the latest of the fiveyear reviews required by federal law. It
is the basis of federal food programs
and nutrition education programs.
"These new guidelines represent
our best science-based advice to help
Americans live healthier and longer
lives," said H.H.S. Secretary Tommy
Thompson. "The report gives action
steps to reach achievable goals in
weight control, stronger muscles and
bones, and balanced nutrition to help
prevent chronic diseases such as heart
disease, diabetes and some cancers.
"Promoting good dietary habits is
key to reducing the growing problems
of obesity and physical inactivity, and
to gaining the health benefits that come
from a nutritionally balanced diet."
Eating a healthy balance of nutritious foods continues as a central
point in the guidelines, but balancing
nutrients is not enough for health.
Total calories also count, especially as
more Americans are gaining weight.
Because almost two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, and
more than half get too little physical
activity, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines place a stronger emphasis on
calorie control and physical activity.
The report identifies 41 key recommendations, of which 23 are for the
general public and 18 for specific
segments of the population. They are
grouped into nine general topics: Adequate nutrients within calorie needs;
weight management; physical activity; food groups to encourage; fats;
carbohydrates; sodium and potassium;
alcoholic beverages and food safety.
"As the government stresses the importance of reduced caloric intake and
smart eating through consumption of a
variety of nutrient-dense foods, the role
of vitamin packed protein sources in a
balanced diet becomes critical," said
Dr. Randall Huffman, vice president of
scientific affairs at the American Meat
Institute Foundation, Washington, D.C.
"Nutrient-dense protein sources, such
as meat and poultry, offer essential vitamins and minerals and quick satiety,
which is a vital part
of any diet," he said.
Huffman praised
the new dietary
guidelines as a scientifically based,
big picture view
of the total diet.
"Consumers
are
urged to pay close
attention to these
guidelines and to
use a healthy serving of skepticism
when considering
the 'nutrition study'
of the week," he
said. "If we adhered
to even a portion
of the advice that
comes from every
'bad food' headline, we'd be cleaning out our pantries
on a weekly basis,"
he said. "Americans
should
continue
to shun the good-food vs. bad-food
advice frequently espoused by special
interest groups and focus on adhering to the advice contained in these
dietary guidelines." Huffman added.
Kraft to use "Sensible" labels on nutritious products
Kraft Foods, Inc., Northfield, Ill., introduced two initiatives this past month to
increase the visibility - among both
adults and children - of the nutritious
products in the company's portfolio.
Using nutrition criteria that are derived from the proposed

U.S.
Dietary
Guidelines, as well as
authoritative statements
from the Food & Drug
Administration, National
Academy of Sciences
and other public health
authorities, Kraft is introducing a Sensible Solution labeling program in the
U.S., featuring a prominent on-pack
"flag" for food and beverage products
that meet specific "better-for-you"

nutrition criteria that Kraft has established for each category of products.
The company is also shifting the mix
of products it advertises in television,
radio and in print viewed primarily by
children ages 6-11. During the course
of 2005, a number of
Kraft products - including many varieties of its Lunchables
products - will not
be advertised in these
media. Kraft will continue its existing policy
of not advertising in media with a
principal audience under age six.

diets," said Lance Friedmann, Kraft's
senior vice president of Global Health
& Wellness. "We believe these initiatives are a step in the right direction."
The Sensible Solution flag will
begin appearing on Kraft's qualifying products in the United States in
April. In many cases, the flag will
contain specific information about
a product's key nutritional benefits.
"We want to provide a range of
options that help people make more
informed decisions about the foods
and beverages they buy," said Friedmann. "With one quick glance at
the Sensible Solution flag, it will be
easier to identify Kraft products that
offer better nutritional choices in
their respective product categories."
