Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield Foods, Inc.,
subsidiaries Smithfield Transportation
(Smithfield), Smithfield Transportation (Tar
Heel, N.C.), Packerland Packing and Murphy-Brown L.L.C. were honored as recipients of the company's fourth annual Environmental Excellence Awards.
Central Florida Foodservice, L.L.C., Orlando, has been formed by Michael Altif and
Michael Strauss. The company operates
a meat processing facility that serves the
central Florida market and specializes in
center-of-the-plate meat, poultry and seafood products.
National Meat Association, Oakland, Calif.,
has announced the recipient of its 2005 E.
Floyd Forbes Award is Dr. Jeff Savell, leader
of the Meat Science Section in Texas A&M's

animal science department. Savell will be
presented the award during N.M.A.'s annual
convention this February. The award annually recognizes one individual for outstanding
service to the industry.
Devault Foods, Devault, Pa., has appointed
Steve Takach as director of street sales.
In other company news, Devault announced that Fortuna Food Brokers, Buffalo, N.Y., will serve as its regional broker for
the upstate New York area.
Cardinal Meat Specialists, Mississauga, Ontario, announced the appointment of Brent
Cator as president.
Washington, D.C.-based Food Marketing
Institute recently hired Anne-Marie Roerink as director of research. Roerink will

be responsible for developing and directing
F.M.I's research strategy through a number
of projects, programs and studies.
Margaret Lawson has been named president-elect of the Institute of Food Technologists, Chicago. Lawson works as technical
services manager for the T. Hasegawa Flavor and Fragrances Co. She will succeed
Dr. Herbert Stone, whose term will run
through August 2005.
Phoenix-based Bar-S Foods Co. announced the hiring of Alison Bennett,
sales accounting assistant in the corporate
office; Michael Punneo, supervisor of the
ham kitchen at the company's Clinton plant
and Ramesh Ramaswamy, operations analyst at the company's corporate office.
