just in case. "The maintenance required
of non-power units such as trailers is
much lighter than it is for power units,
which provides more incentive for purchasing trailers," says Winburn. "However,
we can't justify the cost of purchasing a
spare power unit."
Winburn says Rogers conducted a
return-on-investment analysis that compared owning versus leasing. For purchased trailers, it used an estimate of
1,200 hours per year for a refrigerated trailer; since most of its customers
are located within a 10-mile radius, the
mileage would be relatively low. The life
cycle is typically greater than 10 years,
and the mileage may go as high as
20,000 hours.
By contrast, with an operating lease,
the R.O.I. is instant. However, the life
cycle is typically based on a seven-year
lease, which would be about 9,600 hours.
Therefore, owning trailers is about half
the price of leasing based on the average per power unit. Thus, it is more advantageous to purchase trailers than to
lease them.
