Although Hennon is generally satisfied with his leasing arrangement, he says
one disadvantage is that sometimes, due to the large size of his leasing companies, some details are lost, and there are mistakes such as billing errors.
Wholesalers are also benefiting from truck leasing. One example is Shetakis Wholesalers, Inc., Las Vegas, which serves the hotel industry in southern Nevada with fresh meat and poultry products. It is the largest custom
poultry provider in Las Vegas, and about 25 percent of its business is meat
and poultry. Mike Winburn, vice president of operations, says when the current owner took over in 2000, instead of leasing all of the equipment, he decided to lease the power units and purchase the trailers.
For its outbound shipments, Shetakis leases all of its power units, including 11 tractors and two straight trucks, and it owns all of its trailers. Winburn
says Shetakis had a number of objectives in leasing its truck fleet. First, it
needed to control the reliability of its fleet in order to provide quality customer service. Second, the company wanted the benefit of a newer, more
modern fleet and executives wanted to deal more with fixed costs than variable costs. Finally, the processor wanted to present a positive image with a
clean, state of the art fleet for customers and suppliers.
Another reason for leasing is the need to address regulations and maintenance requests would have required Shetakis to hire a transportation manager. "With leasing, all regulatory requirements are handled by our leasing
company, PacLease, and we only have to make one call for maintenance,"
says Winburn. "If they can't repair the vehicle, they would provide a new
power unit by the next morning."

Wholesalers of meat and poultry products, like Shetakis, benefit from
leasing its trucks by saving thousands in maintenance costs each year.
Shetakis maintains control of its equipment by precooling its trailers to 30°F.
"We have a small distribution radius," says Winburn. "The longest that a truck is
on the road is 10 hours, which does not compromise product integrity. However, we need reliable equipment in order to maintain our customer service level.
One of the benefits of truck leasing is that it keeps resources reliable."
He adds, "we cannot miss a beat with our supply chain. Our customers order by 11 a.m. Our poultry processor pre-cuts some products and prepares the
rest. They load their shipments by 6 p.m., and they reach Las Vegas by 2 a.m.
