Security issues are driving
supply chain management
NEW YORK - A single breach of security anywhere in a company's supply chain
can result in staggering losses around the world, according to one of the key findings in a new study by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. The study also shows that security is increasingly becoming a focus for directors of corporate boards who view it as
a strategic investment that can reap measurable benefits.
In a study titled Prospering in the Secure Economy, Deloitte executives say the
essence of security for companies has expanded from protecting assets and people to sustaining business no matter what type of interruption might occur, from
a sudden spike in interest rates to the discovery of an animal disease outbreak,
to an act of terrorism. As a result, the study finds, a new "secure economy" is
evolving characterized by greater vulnerability to business disruption, increased
awareness of threats, regulatory compliance, and an expanding ability to respond
rapidly to change.
"While governments continue to create safeguards to protect national borders
and patrol the skies, the managers of businesses are now squarely in the front line
when it comes to protecting their supply chain, their data, their brand, and their
very existence," says Jerry Leamon, Deloitte Global Managing Partner for Clients
& Markets. "If companies don't take steps to protect their employees, customers,
shareholders and society from the risks now inherent in their businesses, they also
risk more costly mandated government regulations. In the new secure economy,
C.E.O.s are not only asking themselves how they can increase shareholder value
but, increasingly, 'What can destroy our brand?'"
If customers lose faith or trust in a
company, it can threaten the very
survival of the organization.
According to the study, there are many opportunities to disrupt a global supply chain in an interconnected economy. Companies must therefore move beyond
compliance with local government security measures to ensure that their full range
of operations continues without disruption.
The study found that a secure economic environment results in measurable business benefits, including:
* Cost reduction. Security investments can drive efficiency into the supply
chain. For example, one supply chain initiative generated cost savings of
between $378 and $462 per shipping container.
* Enhanced revenues. New technologies such as radio frequency identification tags track the location of containers and products at any point along the
supply chain and help to reduce costly excess inventory.
* Better risk management. Proactive security policies help firms better manage
operational and information technology failures from security incidents.
* Brand protection. Security investments protect a brand against a crisis such
as product tampering.
"Companies view risk to their brands as their single biggest business hazard," says Greg Pellegrino, Deloitte's Global Public Sector Industry Leader and

Tyson Foods realigns
deli business
SPRINGDALE, ARK. - Tyson Foods, Inc., has
realigned its deli business under a new division
named Tyson Deli, Inc. The new business unit
offers customers a full line of Tyson, Russer and
Wilson deli brands, as well as prepared foods
products for the supermarket deli.
Tyson deli products were previously marketed
through two separate sales groups. This business will now be handled by the new Tyson Deli,
Inc., which is positioned to offer retailers expertise in a range of product offerings, branded concepts and retailer specific programs.
Brent Schmiegelow, formerly a senior sales
executive at Sara Lee, will lead the unified sales
force as the Tyson Deli vice president of sales.
Dave Dunlevy and Greg Lancelot will report to
Schmiegelow and serve as vice presidents of
divisional sales.
Research unlocks beef
genome
DENVER - The potential to selectively and accurately breed cattle for specific traits such as
improved meat yield or tenderness has been enhanced with the release of the first draft of the
bovine genome sequence. Scientists say the research, which is now available to researchers in
public databases, will underpin cattle research
for the next several decades. A team led by Dr.
Richard Gibbs at Baylor College of Medicine's
Human Genome Sequencing Center in Houston
carried out the sequencing and assembly of the
bovine genome.
"You won't have to be a genomics expert to
profit from this research," says Paul Genho of
King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas. "The potential
is huge. We now have a roadmap that researchers can reference for almost anything they want
to know about the beef genome. This tells scientists exactly where within the cattle genome they
can locate many of the traits they want to study."
By sequencing the genome, scientists will
be able to isolate and further investigate the
traits specific genes provide cattle breeders.
Dr. Clare Gill, a researcher at Texas A&M Univ.,
says scientists already are using this research
to study things like quality traits that will help
cattlemen manipulate their herds with more
predictability.
