Beef bolsters Tyson Foods
Tyson Foods, Inc., Springdale, Ark., reported fiscal year 2003 fourth
quarter sales of $6.6 billion compared to $5.8 billion for the same
period this past year. Operating income for the fourth quarter was
$308 million compared to $188 million, and earnings were $147 million compared to $84 million. Sales for fiscal 2003 were $24.6 billion
compared to $23.4 billion this past year.
"We continue to make adjustments to our business to better position us for the future," said John Tyson, chairman and C.E.O. "I am
pleased with the progress we've made. We achieved our synergy target and reduced our debt-to-capital ratio to just below 48 percent,
well below our target of 50 percent.
"In fiscal 2003 we embarked on an aggressive goal to increase
the percentage of sales from value-added products from 35 percent
to 50 percent within five years. During the year we successfully introduced and gained share in new products across all channels, including Tyson branded consumer products in the raw and fully-cooked
bacon, self-serve deli meats, luncheon meats, dinner meats, canned
broths and bullions categories."

sales prices and a 4.2 percent decrease in volume. Case-ready pork
sales were $63 million and increased 58.3 percent, domestic fresh
meat pork sales increased 10.7 percent, international pork sales increased 54.1 percent, and live swine sales decreased 58.7 percent.
Pork segment operating income increased $42 million.
Fiscal 2003 results
For the year, beef sales increased $1.4 billion or 13.8 percent from
the same period last year, with a 13.2 percent increase in average
sales prices and a slight increase in volume. Case-ready beef sales
were $957 million and increased 20.4 percent. Beef segment operating income increased $100 million.
Chicken sales for the year increased $205 million over fiscal 2002,
with a slight decrease in average sales prices and a 3.3 percent increase in volume. Chicken segment operating income decreased
$270 million compared to 2002, primarily due to increased grain
costs and plant closing costs.

Beef was the big winner for the company in the fourth quarter. Segment sales increased $641 million or 24.2 percent from the same period this past year, with a 22.5 percent increase in average sales prices and a 1.4 percent increase in volume. Case-ready beef sales were
$263 million and increased 33.3 percent, domestic fresh meat beef
sales increased 22.1 percent and international beef sales increased
29.1 percent. Beef segment operating income increased $95 million.
The beef segment sales and operating income increases were due
to the combination of demand against decreased supplies of domestic beef caused in part by the U.S. ban on Canadian beef. However,
the increases were partially offset by an increase in live cattle prices.
Chicken segment fourth quarter sales increased $133 million or
7.4 percent compared to the same period this past year, with a 2.3
percent increase in average sales prices and a 5 percent increase
in volume. Segment operating income decreased $18 million from
the same period this past year, primarily due to increased grain and
plant closing costs.
Pork sales increased $83 million or 14.5 percent compared to
Pork sales decreased $33 million or 1.3 percent compared to the
past fiscal year. Sales of case-ready pork reached $221 million and
increased 52.3 percent. Segment operating income increased $50
million. Excluding the fourth quarter 2002 live swine restructuring
charge of $26 million, operating income increased $24 million.
Welcome to Canada
The company also announced a joint venture with Export Packers
Co. Ltd., which will give Tyson Foods access to the Canadian poultry
market. The venture's production facility will be located in Paris, Ontario. More than 30 employees will initially work at the production facility. Start-up is planned for spring 2004. The name of the company
is Export Packers Foods Limited.
The venture will produce Tyson brand products, as well as products sold under Export Packers' brands for both foodservice and retail
markets. The venture will combine the efforts of both companies' existing sales forces and distribution channels to create a Canada-wide
sales force with representation in all major segments of the market.
Branding success boosts Hormel
Citing strong demand for its marinated and fully cooked meat products, Hormel Foods Corp. raised its
earnings guidance for its fourth fiscal
quarter. Company officials also attributed the revised expectations to a quick
turnaround in the turkey market.
For the quarter ended Oct. 25,
Hormel expects earnings per share to range from 48 cents to
50 cents, including a 1-cent per share effect for expensing stock

options. Previous earnings projections were between 36 cents and
44 cents per share.
Over the past year Hormel has grown its branded products, which now account for 79 percent of
sales. Its branded lines include fully cooked entrees, fully cooked bacon and marinated pork,
beef, chicken and turkey. Meanwhile, non-branded, unaltered meats such as pork chops and roasts account for
about 21 percent of sales.
